This epigraphy reader offers a broad selection of Etruscan, Latin, and Greek inscriptions in the Netherlands. It aims to highlight the vast richness, diversity, and historical importance of epigraphic objects in Dutch museum collections. All the texts have been carefully edited on the basis of autopsy or photographs. English translations are provided throughout to make the texts accessible to students with no or only rudimentary knowledge of the relevant languages. Epigraphical and historical commentary have been kept to a bare minimum, not giving away anything that ought to be discovered jointly in the classroom or individually as part of a research assignment. Primarily intended for use in an introductory course in epigraphy, this book should appeal to anyone interested in the Classical World. The first nine chapters include inscriptions from the Mediterranean. Chapters 1-8 cover Etruria, Roman Italy, North Africa, Egypt, Asia Minor, with a separate chapter on Smyrna, and Greece, with a chapter dedicated to Attica. Christian inscriptions from the Mediterranean are set apart in Chapter 9. The next three chapters include Latin inscriptions found in the Netherlands. Chapter 10 presents building inscriptions, milestones, and epitaphs; Chapter 11 contains dedications to various gods and goddesses, and Chapter 12 is dedicated to the goddess Nehalennia. Chapter 13 is comprised of forgeries. The book concludes with two concise appendices on numerals and the names of months, to aid the reading of numbers and dates in epigraphic texts. Read more
