On 22 January 2007, Abbé Pierre, the founder of the Emmaus Movement, left us “to go on a long journey”, as he used to say. A decade has passed since his death and the date represents a chance to showcase Abbé Pierre’s spiritual legacy, which is alive and well in the Emmaus groups, while continuing to champion social justice and solidarity on all fronts and in all areas.

A large number of events are planned throughout Europe, particularly in France, where the Emmaus Movement was founded. Emmaus France is organizing an event on 22 January 2017 in Paris with the aim being to convey the Emmaus Movement’s values and champion its campaigns. The day will kick off with a civil society meeting attended by economists, sociologists and non-profits.  A massive campaigning and celebratory event will be held in the afternoon with lots of surprises (including a soup kitchen run by the Michelin-starred chef Thierry Marx, flashmob, campaign march, Article 13 themed event, workshops and brass bands). The day will also mark the start of a year packed with events and campaigns to continue Abbé Pierre’s work to create a more humane and fairer world.
